ASUS U3S review

ASUS U3S is very well designed. When closed the notebook is whole black, Only on the back side is a silver line. Cover is made from metal and its surfaceis smooth and reflects like a mirror. It is nice, but you have to clean it often to keep the effect on:) The sides are hardened by metal so the construction is strong. Good thing is the leather surface arounf touchpad. The only thing i dislike about this mode are a bigger edges around display.

There are many ports and features inside. On the front side is no connector, on the left Audio, card reader (MMC, SD, MS/Pro), Wifi switcher FireWire, USB, cooling output and S-video.
The back side id filled mostly by battery, on the sides are VGA, modem and LAN. On the right side are the most interesting ports - Express Card, switcher of the graphics card, two USBs, port for external GPS antenna, HDMI output, eSATA connector to plig-in an external disc. So, as I wrote there are only 3 USB ports, but apart from that everything else is very good. HDMI is a step forward and eSATA is great option for extensive disk space with very fast speed.

U3S is small notebook 318x243x32 and weight only 1.82kg. Power adapter is bigger and has 488g.

Keyboard is silver with black lables. With Fn you can switch display mods, camera, VoIP, WWW browser, mail client, wsitch WiFi/BT, turn sleep mode on, adjust brightness, adjust volume and activate/deactivate touchpad. Touchpad is well built since it does nothing when writing on keyboard. The buttons a bit harder and between them is fingerprint reader.

Notebook has got Core2 Duo T7500 and therefore the tests are not bad at all:

Single-Thread mode
test of calculations with fixed point: 27 079
test of calculations with floating point: 16 628

Multi-Thread mode
test of calculations with fixed point: 54 252
test of calculations with floating point: 33 257

Windows Vista – CPU
index for operations per second: 5.1

Cinebench 9.5

Rendering (Multiple CPU): 683
Multiprocessor Speedup: 1,86

Memory is 1.5GB while 512MB is integrated onboard and test HWiNFO measured 2686 MB/s

Hard disc has got 160GB and 5400rpm, and is very fast, comparable nearly with 7200rpm disc

HWiNFO32: 108,03 MB/s
HD Tach: 36,2 MB/s
Average access time: 16,63 ms
Windows Vista – Index of speed: 4,9

Optic drive is not inside the notebook and you have to plug it to USB - therefore you have only 2 usb ports left! The drive
is good, but a bit loud.

U3S has got GPS! On the CD you can find software AsusMap and you will get extern antenna. As i tested in the most case is the internal antenna good enough to have a good signal.

Display 13.3" has got 1280x800 resolution that is an average, but there is no need for better resolution since it is a small sized display. Colors are good and display has got a wide range to adjust backlight and there is no problem to use it comfortably on daylight.

There are two graphic cards inside - Intel GMA X3100 and dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G with 128MB DDR2.

OpenGL Speedup: 2,62

Performance is not great but it should be expected - GeForce 8400M is lowend. It would be better to have GeForce 8600M GS inside. Mode for integrated graphics card is power saving and when you want to switch the graphics cards you have to restart notebook.
HDMI is working only with dedicated card.

Audio serves HD chip Realtek ALC660 and the integrated reproductors are good and loud enough. Microphone works with no problems and camera is usable even when the notebook is closed.

Cooling system is nothing extra. The cooler runs all the time and when power-saving mode is switcher it is silent enough. When you switch on normal mode the cooler is loud enough to be heard in the whole room clearly even when you are not working on the laptop. When you try to run 3D mark and measure temperatures you can easily see over 80 degrees on the CPU and over 110! degrees on the graphics card.

You will get two batteries with this notebook. One smaller and one bigger.

Battery time with standard work:
Smaller battery, integrated graphic = 2 h 3 m
Bigger battery, integrated graphic = 4 h
Smaller battery, dedicated graphic = 48 m
Bigger battery, dedicated graphic = 1 h a 49 m

As a comclusion i must appreciate many usefull features on this device, but on the other hand small notebook should be more silent.

HP Compaq 6710b review

HP Compaq 6710b has got traditionall conservative design. Characteristic is black and dark grey color and square shape. Design is simple without specialitiesand extravagancies. Somebody can call this design as a square black boxes, but some people like this design much more than the futuristic new models of a competition. The chasi is exemplary well manufactured. Cover of display and the basis of notebook are very strong and you can suspect that it can whitstand even rough manipulating,so this notebook has not to be the whole time on the desk of a table.

The 15.4" display is big enough to have relativelly good resolution and the keyboard has enough space to be comfortable So i must say that this is laptop is exemplary case that 15.4" is enough for the majority of works.

On the front side of laptop are only two reproductors. On the back side (as is usual for HP i think) is not power connector, but there areLAN, VGA output, TV out as a S-Video. On the right side are from the rear analog modem, optics mechanic and two USB ports. These USBare better on the back side because when I connect something to the right i got a problem because on the right i usually have external mouse Up from the USB ports is a card reader for SD, MMC, MS/Pro, XD and card inside always overreaches. On the left side is on the back the power connector, thenthere is the output of cooler, two USB ports enough distance apart, two audio connectors and finally firewire with PCMCIA slot which has got dummy plug inside. So as i wrote there is no Express Card slot maybe because there are still not many devices for that slot. Port for docking station is on the down side of laptop uncovered.

Indicating diodes are placed in two rows. First is on the front side aligned to the left. There are 4 diodes - first indicating transmitter Wifi/BT and has got blue light. The second is green and signals if the notebook on or stand-by. Third shows the battery status - when it has got orange color the battery is not charging, If it flashesthe battery is very low and when it is green the battery is charging. Last informs about disc with green color. If protective system for the dosc is activated it signals withorange light. The second row is above the keyboard and is combinated with touch sensors - same as Pavilion laptops. All the buttons which were placed above the keyboard were cancelledand the only one is the power switch. This switch includes green diode with the same logic as the diode on the front. On the right is the icon of HP Info Center which when touchedis green lighted and runs the application. In this application all the options specific for HP notebooks are adjusted, so i think that it is very usefull. Next icon is blue
and shows the work of wireless transmitter and you can switch it on/off by touching. Third icons is for switching to presentation mode.On the middle there are indicators of the locks of keyboard - num lock and caps lock. The last item above the keyboard is the volume controller.
Overall i must say that the sensors are not good at all because when pressing keys on the first row of the keyboard I often pressed the sensor as well so i think old buttons were better.

When the laptop is closed the cover is hold by two locks. Both are moving by draging movable button on the front of the cover. This button is a little bit hard, but i had no problems when opening laptop. The laptop is light if compared to other laptops of the same size. The power adapter has got 90W but is not heavy - 513g including both cables. So, the notebook has got acceptable weight for daily carrying.

---------------------- Keyboard and operating elements ----------------

Keyboard is black with very contrast white lables. Lables for function key are traditionally blue. Layout is ideal i think, space key and shift keys are big enough. In the left down corner is CTRL key.Fn is left from CTRL and it is possible to switch it in the BIOS. There is also the windows key which i dont use. Home, end, pageup, and pagedown are on the right edge og the keyboard and they are divided by small gapfrom the keyboard so it is possible to get them comfortably even when it is dark. With the function key is implemented the sleep switch, graphics output switch and regulation of backlight. If you want to write numbers on the numeric
keyboard there is a small trick - switch on NumLock and then press twice ScrollLock. In that time when you press Fn you will write letters and without will be switched numeric keyboard on the part of letter keys. This is very goodfeature and many people will surely use it. Writing on the keyboard is very comfortable and writing on the keyboard is very silent. So at the end i dont know any wrong thing about the keyboard to write here.

Similar to the majority notebooks the touchpad is in the middle down from the keyboard. It has got two buttons and draging your finger on the right side simulates the wheel on a mouse. Special thing abouttouchpad is that the best is to uninstall all drivers for touchpad to get the touchpad work well in all applications - i mean the feature on the right side is not working always when you have drivers installed.

------------------------ Main HW parameters ---------------------------

Compaq 6710b is based on a platform Santa Rosa. So there is new chipset used and with that slightly inovated processors Core2 Duo. This model has got chipset Intel GM965 and processor Core2 Duo T7500. Processor supports technology SpeedStep which can smoothly decrease power for the processor for better battery time.

There are some hardware test to have a look on the performance numbers of this laptop:

Single-Thread mode
test of calculations with fixed point: 28739
test of calculations with floating point: 53755

Multi-Thread mode (zatížena obě jádra)
test of calculations with fixed point: 17677
test of calculations with floating point: 33071

Windows Vista – CPU
index for operations per second: 5.1

Cinebench 9.5
Rendering (Single CPU): 379
Rendering (Multiple CPU): 677
Multiprocessor Speedup: 1.79

As you can see the results the values are pretty good and can handle every work. To acompany processor there are two 1GB modules 677MHz and the memory got Vista Index 4.8 and transmissivity measured by HWiNFO32 was 2517MB/s

Hard disc 2.5" with 160GB and 5400rpm is standard. 8MB cache makes it faster and the disc is protected by 3D DriveGuard which stops the work of disc when necessary

-------------------------- Display and graphics --------------------------

Display has got enough space to work and on the other side is not large so it is possible to carry laptop in your bag. Display has aspect ratio 16:10 and dark surface. The resolution 1680x1050 is fine and i think that no more is needed. The visibility angles are very good and I was able to read text from display really from everywhere. If you dont like that somebody else can see your screen from angle you can buy HP Privacy Filter. The colors and backlight are excellent so even when working with graphics there is no need to add an extern monitor.

Graphics processing is up to the graphics card Intel GMA X3100 ontegrated on the chipset. Supports Shader Model 3.0 and has got sufficient performance for common applications
and even good for the new workspace Vista Aero and films.
The performance overview surely needs some tests:

3D Mark
3DMark 2001: 6111
3DMark 03: 1765
3DMark 05: 918
3DMark 06: 480

Windows Vista
Index of graphics performance Aero: 3.4
Index of graphics performance for 3D games: 3.5

Cinebench 9.5
Shading (CINEMA 4D): 442

* Shading (OpenGL Software Lighting): 725

* Shading (OpenGL Hardware Lighting): 979
OpenGL Speedup: 2.21

As you can read above, this card is not good for playing the newest games, but if you are not a player then it will fit you well, because this solution cunsumes less power than nin-integrated cards.

----------------------- Multimedia -------------------------------

I didnt supposed any great multimedial features since it is a business laptop. The sound is served by SoundMAX chip and it is only a basic solutionto play. Volume is adjusted above keyboard by the sensors and is not easy to handle. It would be much better with simple buttonsinstead of this.Integrated reproductors are very good. Their quality is very high and apart from other laptops they have good middles. Anyway without a subwooferis the sound poor. Integrated microphone is right above the keyboard and is good for internet calls. A little bit shame is that there is no webcam which is cheap and should be included because many businessmen are often calling home with cam switched on when they are far away for longer time.

-------------------------- Cooling and loudness -------------------------

Cooling circuit is well constructed and seems to be very evective. Inside is one cooler which gets cold air from the down side of the deviceand then the hot air is expelled from the left side. Everything seems OK - it is precise work. Problem is that the whole system is trying to
cool to very low temperatures and as i have measured it seemed to me that cooler is switched off when it is only 40 degrees what is in summerimpossible. Even in climatizated room the cooler runs nearly nonstop. Therefore the cooler often switches to the second speed that is pretty
loud so this is a bit minus for this device.

------------------------- Battery --------------------------------------

I tried the new battery personally and its time was 4hours and 20 minutes. That is very good and usefull value. If you will switch on the full brightness and demand full performance the battery will serve only for 3 hours. It is possible to buy additional battery to get your time up.

------------------------- Conclusion ---------------------------------

The most important negative of this laptop is the loud cooler which will be improved soon. Apart from that the notebook is ideal for business work. Perfect display with high resolution and above-average view angles, keyboard with ideal layout, good touchpad, excellent construction, sinple design and good security. There are the main positives for your work on journeys.

Toshiba Tecra A9 review - business notebook

Toshiba Tecra A9 is a business notebook with average size and average weight. It is built on the Intel Centrino platform with integratedgraphics and has improved the security.

Laptop is looking fine for the first view, it is made form combination black and silver color, while the silver chasiss is enough strong to whitstand come accidents. The chasiss was tested by toshiba as a Shock Protection technology that protects important parts in case of fall. The notebook measures are 366x268x38.9 and weight is 2.88kg. So it is a laptop of the middle class.

Display has got a common 15.4" size with WSXGA+ (1680x1050) resolution. That is very good, especially when you are working with many windows opened. Keyboard is black with small enter and is protected against spill. You can choose to use touchpad or trackpoint.

This laptop is built on the platform Intel Centrino Duo (Santa Rosa). Chipset Intel GM965 Express with processor Intel Core 2 Duo (800 MHz FSB). Graphics integrated chip Intel GMA X3100 vith up to 358 shared memory and 2GB processing memory, that is extendable to 4GB. The modules are DDR2 with 667MHz and dual channel. This combination has got good performance for work and the battery life is also very good because od the integrated graphics.

Hard Disc is protected against data loss by protection from shakes and monitoring position in three axis. Disc has got 160GB and uses Serial ATA. Rotation speed is 5400rpm. Battery has got aboveaverage 5100 mAh.

Comunitacion equip is also very good, nothing important is missing. I/O ports are all standard and specially was added fingerprint reader.

You will get also wide software outfit including Connectivity Doctor, Toshiba Bluetooth Stack, Toshiba Bluetooth Monitor, InterVideo WinDVD (software DVD player), Toshiba Disc Creator (burning software), Norton Internet Security 2007 (for 90 days), packet Toshiba Value Added, Toshiba Security Assist, Toshiba Assist, 60 days trial Microsoft Office Professional 2007, ConfigFree (connections to computer web).

Garmin nuvi 670 GPS review

Garmin nuvi 670 GPS has got widescreen 4.3", supports Bluetooth and even mp3 player is not missing. The display is really big with resolution 480x272 16:9 is very comfortable to look at the map. The device is equipped with Bluetoot, so your connection to mobile phone will work as a handsfree with microphone included and repro. Extremely sensitive reciever allows you to recieve GPS signal in cars with
front window heating, where you normally have to use extern reciever.

Transmitter
it works very well with your car audio. Navigation will offer you for example freq. 91.5FM and you can use it on your radio to hear navigation, MP3 at once you can add mobile phone if you connect it via Bluetooth.

Handsfree
handsfree works fine - when the mobile phone starts ringing, the navigation switches automaticly to the phone status and you can recieve your call. If you connect the navigation to the radio it is ok, but if you rely on the in-built repro it is nearly unable to be understood especially when you drive fast on highway. The connection with mobile phone is fine, all the data from your mobile phone appears on the navigation including photos, mp3, contacts,...

Pioneer DV-600AV review

Pioneer DV-600AV was interesting for me because it has possibility to play DVD-Audio and SACD and it has got integrated decoder with analog output for 5.1. Extra interesting is the quality of sound which some DVD players are having bad quality. Quality of sound was pretty good with nice serve of acustic which i wasnt able to heat on my older players.

I/O
Back side includes HDMI, component Video, S-video, audio 5.1, scart, optic and koaxial output. On the front panel is placed conector USB 1.1 for USB devices. There should be more conectors, but on the other hand we shall be glad that none of the important connectors is missing. Extern USB devices are not supported as manufacturer has written. In the real it is working with no problems:) I tried from flash disk Kingston Data traveller II. It is possible to play mp3 with variate compression eventhough it is written in manual that it is impossible. Actually it shows actual values of the data stream on the screen:D

Display
display is blue backlighted and well readable. Shows basic statuses of the player and informations about playing music. On the connected screen is possible to see all aditional informations.

DVD
It is possible to eject with remote controller what is comfortable. Drive is fast and fastly responds orders. It is silent and you can hear it only when loading or when quickly switching the songs, but anyway it is not loud in that cases.

Remote controller
Remote controller does not need exact aim on the device and fits well to your hand. It has strong construction so you can drop it on the floor without being afraid. The only think i dislike about controller are the buttons menu, top menu, home menu - these are labeled not well and it is a bit confusing for the user.

Playable formats
Devide is able to play almost all common formats including SCAD Multi and DVD-Audio what is not common for the price category of this device. The only one format which i wasnt able to play was Mini DV. The device recognizes it but it will not play. The supported are:DVD/CD/SVCD/VCD/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R/DVD-RW/ DVD+R/DVD+RW/ DivX 5/ DivX 4/ DivX 3/ DivX VOD/DivX ULTRA, MP3 / WMA, MPEG4-AAC.

Video
Supported is 4:3 and 16:9. Video is very high quality when playing DVD - it is sharp and live. There are many possibilities to set corrections for the video. You can set sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Hue, Chroma level, BNR.

Finally thing I apreciate is that it consumes a low ammount of energy - playing 12W, stand-by only 0.8w

HP Pavilion HDX review

HP Pavilion HDX is made to be on the desk at home rather than have it on your legs because of its weight. It is really crowded by high-tech features. This device is great entertaiment centre for your home, but on teh other hand the display has not the full esolution of HD DVD - 1080p. Anyway it is good decission to make one device for playing video, work and computer games.

HDX has the design of the entrtaiment laptops from HP with simillar black-silver coloring and mild sign on the down side of cover. The highest measure of closed HDX
is 4826mm and it weights nice 16 pounds without adapter:) It is the heaviest laptop i have ever seen. So i think it is possible to transfer it between rooms or take it
to your holiday with car but not to travel with it by public transport every day.

Display of this size needs to be more fasten than standard laptops and therefore he got a strong arm from its back. This solution I appreciate much. Opening and closing is very easy, everything is exact and goes smooth.

Keyboard is very large because of space on the desk so it is comfortable writing since it has same measures as a standard keyboard. Touchpad is looking very well - futuristic but i must say that moving your finger on it is not comfortable, so i would prefer simple flat one.

Remote controller is big for laptop and it is placed in a holder left from the keyboard. You can use it as a part of keyboard or take it away and use from distance.
I appreciate this solution because you will never loose controller if you will take care placing it on its place next to the keyboard.

Web camera, fingerprint reader and TV tuner fills up all the features needed for entertaiment.

The great thing is huge display 20.1" WSXGA+ Ultra Widescreen. With resolution 1680x1050 is impossible to reach the real 1080p HD, but you will find this resolution on majority on the 20.1" displays. Display is sharp and bright and the BrightView feature is great for playing video or games.

As i mentioned this device is the home cinema as well. HDMI is included as necessary port especially when u want HD DVD. Extern SATA port is very usable because you can add the second disc if the inbuilt 240GB will not be sufficient.

I recommand to buy HDX with CPU Core 2 Extreme because this chip is ulocked for overclocking. This can spare a lot of money because you are able to increase the power of your laptop. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT supports DirectX10, and is one of the first for laptops.

Baterry serves more as an backup becauce it cad run only about half an hour without power.
